Syed Kirmani

About

Syed Kirmani is a revered name in Indian cricket history, who rose to prominence during the 1983 Cricket World Cup, where he played a pivotal role in India's historic triumph. Awarded the Best Wicketkeeper of the tournament, Kirmani's defining moment was his crucial catch of Faoud Bacchus in the final against the West Indies. His consistent performance throughout the tournament, including an outstanding display against Zimbabwe where he equaled the record with three catches and two stumpings.

He is celebrated for his impressive skills as a wicketkeeper-batsman who represented both India and Karnataka. Syed's career spanned from his debut in the early 1970s to the mid-1980s, during which he made significant contributions to the sport and achieved numerous milestones.

Syed began his international journey as an understudy to the legendary Farokh Engineer during England tours in 1971 and 1974, followed by his participation in the 1975 World Cup. His breakthrough came early when, in only his second Test match against New Zealand, he equaled the world record with six dismissals in an innings.

During New Zealand's tour of India, he topped the batting averages with an impressive 65.33 and continued to impress with a notable 305 runs scored in the Australian tour. Notably, during the England series in 1981–82, Syed achieved a rare feat by not conceding a single bye in three consecutive Tests.

In Test cricket, Syed further established his legacy with two centuries to his name. His innings of 102 in Bombay, combined with a record-breaking 235-run partnership with Ravi Shastri, exemplified his batting skills.

Post-retirement, Syed remained actively involved in cricket, coaching and representing Indian Railways in domestic cricket before returning to his roots with Karnataka.
